SPRINT star Danny Talbot returns to the indoor track this weekend as he looks to put himself on the path to this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

London 2012 Olympian Talbot, 22, didn’t take part in the indoor season last year but the Trowbridge Tornado hasn’t stuck with that plan of action in 2014.

He will grab his first taste of competition this year when he competes in the 60m at the South of England Championships, at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in London, on Sunday.

200m specialist Talbot’s major goal of the season is securing a spot in the England squad for July’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow but before that, the Wiltshire ace’s indoor competition will build up to February’s British Indoor Championships at the English Institute of Sport, in Sheffield.

“I went on holiday with my friends last September and after that, winter training was pretty hard all through October, November and December,” he said.

“Things have settled down a little bit now that competition starts next weekend.

“Last year, I didn’t do the indoor season and I guess you could say that it worked because I ran a personal best outdoors (20.45 seconds in the 200m at an international event in Geneva, last June) but I was lacking that little bit of sharpness as the season went on.

“So this year, I’m going to try doing it again.

“My start is probably the weakest part of my race so I’m going to be doing a lot of 60m races to try and work on that first stretch.

“I’ve been doing a lot of distance work over the winter so I’m going to use the 60m races as sprint training – I usually finish strongly so hopefully working on this part will help.

“I’ve got the UK championships to concentrate on and then after that, my group should be going out to train in America again in March or April.

“I’ll do a few races out there and hopefully run the qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games.”

Talbot’s biggest disappointment of 2013 was being controversially overlooked for Great Britain’s World Championship squad and coach Dan Cossins revealed that the Trowbridge Tornado may look to add another string to his bow and experiment with running 400m.

But the Wiltshire star says that the 200m is still his focus.

He said: “I was going to try a bit of 400m at the end of the season but I got pretty ill and ended up not doing it.

“The 200m is still my event, especially with the Commonwealths to think about, so I think that I might look to give it a go at the end of the year but not before that.”
