The final go-ahead has been given for the footpath across The Green in Devizes to be widened and shared by both pedestrians and cyclists.

Wiltshire Council’s deputy leader Coun John Thomson gave approval after the proposal was advertised as a cycle track order.

One objection was received in the consultation period from Dr A Graham, of Potterne, who believes the shared path is unwarranted, would damage The Green and increase light pollution.

Lampposts will be erected alongside the widened path.

Wiltshire Council’s road safety auditors said lighting was a necessity.

The plan is a key part of the Devizes cycle network developed between Wiltshire Council and Devizes Community Partnership to improve cycle infrastructure in the area of Nursteed Road, Southbroom Road and Roses roundabout.

The council also says the shared footpath will improve alternative travel options.

Devizes Town Council was initially unhappy about the style of lampposts proposed but agreed when alternative designs were submitted.

The cost of the project is about £250,000, with most of the money to be used for widening and resurfacing the path with the remainder for the lighting.

Housing developers will give £200,000 while £50,000 has been given by Wiltshire Council from government funds provided for highway schemes.

The new dual use path should be ready for use by April.
