STAFF at a Swindon McDonald’s are celebrating after their efforts to keep the toilets clean was rewarded.

The Cocklebury restaurant on the Great Western Way was awarded Gold status for the facilities at the prestigious annual independent Loo of the Year Awards.

The prize is given for a wide range of factors, including signage, décor, fixtures and fittings, air quality as well as overall standards of cleanliness and management.

McDonald’s as a company also won the Accessible Toilet Entries at the awards, which have been running since 1987, and is considered in the business as the Oscars of the public convenience world.

Chris Lawrence, the business manager at the Cocklebury branch, said: “Everyone is very pleased with this award as it shows all the hard work that goes into making our toilets clean.

"It is a team effort and everyone understands the importance of cleanliness. We pay a lot of attention to making sure they are always in top condition.”

The award is given following a random check by an inspector, which can take place at any time. The facilities are judged on numerous standards and held to the same standard regardless of how busy the restaurant is.

Although it may not seem a key part of the restaurant’s running, Chris says it is important to keep the toilets clean because it is the best way for customers to gauge hygiene levels.

He said: “Most people do not get the chance to see the kitchens so they cannot see the importance we all place on hygiene.

“If you have clean toilets then I think it leaves a very good impression in people’s minds.”

To be eligible for an award, the restaurant can be nominated by staff, customers, visitors, managers, owners or contractors.

Swindon franchisee Paul Booth said: “We prioritise making every aspect of a visit to McDonald’s of the highest possible standard.

“We believe that everyone deserves clean, safe and well-appointed toilet facilities.

“We ensure that these high standards are across the board, catering for everyone including disabled visitors and parents with small children.”
