WOOTTON Bassett put in a superb first-half performance to record an impressive 4-1 away victory at Sarum Youth Seniors on Saturday, writes LEE CLARK.

The Wiltshire side faced a potentially tricky trip to Castle Meadow to face a Sarum Youth Senior side that hadn’t lost in the league since the latter stages of November, in what was the only game to survive the weather this weekend.

With Wootton Bassett’s form of late being indifferent, manager Dave Terry introduced a few experienced players back from injury and the changes had a big impact.

Shaun Terry put the visitors in front early in the first half, as he hit a 35-yard screamer which left the Sarum goalkeeper clutching at air.

The ever-impressive Lewis Petrie doubled Bassett’s advantage soon after, as they continued to play fantastic football leaving Sarum chasing shadows. Petrie scored twice more before half-time to complete his first half hat-trick and give Wootton Bassett a commanding 4-0 lead at the break.

At the interval, Dave Terry introduced three young substitutes as he was keen to give the younger players in the squad a chance with the three points virtually secured.

Sarum were much more competitive in the second half as they grabbed a consolation from the penalty spot to leave a small blot on what was otherwise a fantastic away performance by Bassett.

Terry was delighted with the first-half performance from his side.

“The attitude and the work rate in the first half was absolutely superb, all of the lads put in 110 per cent,” he said.

Terry also praised the standard of the playing surface and felt it allowed his side to play the fantastic flowing football which was seen particularly in the earlier parts of the game.

“Some of our one-touch football was fantastic in the first half,” he said. “The players really got it right after a bad spell as of late.”
