Having mashing time at Urchfont spud fair

Gardeners keen to try new varieties of potatoes flocked to a fair at Urchfont Village Hall on Saturday.
Visitor numbers were down by almost half on last year, but the organisers, Urchfont Gardening Club, were pleased with how the event went.
Pennard Plants, from Somerset, brought 78 varieties of seeds and tubers as about 140 visitors arrived from Urchfont, Pewsey, East-erton, Market Lavington and Upavon.
Club chairman Peter Cook said: “The other fairs this company goes to have also had fewer people. We put it down to the weather. It was a dry day, but I think people aren’t in the gardening mood.
“We feel the fair is doing something good and it’s there for people to experiment with two or three tubers and try a new flavour, shape or colour. Some are better for mashing and some for roasting.”
