Devizes MP Claire Perry is calling for action after meeting villagers in Great Bedwyn and Enford affected by flooding.

At a well-attended flood group meeting in Great Bedwyn, Mrs Perry heard about the problems.

Roger Durie, the chairman of Great Bedwyn Parish Council, said: “We had a lot of water in Church Street, there were two or three homes affected and water got into the surgery, too.

“There’s an application with DEFRA to increase the size of the drains, because it’s difficult to do anything in the short term without sorting out the drains.

“We have a flood committee chaired by Maggie Dunn, whose home has been flooded two or three times.

“She’s been liaising with all the bodies, but is moving from the village.”

Work needs to be carried out with Network Rail on culverts and pipes, and improvements made in roadside and drain maintenance and flood protection measures within homes.

In Enford, residents told Mrs Perry water run-off from land behind the village, the emergence of springs with enough force to lift the road surface and under-capacity drains were problems.

Parish council chairman Ken Monk said: “There was about nine inches of water outside the Swan and you had to wear wellies to the pub.

"There are some homes where water comes up from the ground through springs and they have pumps, but there was nowhere for the water to go, so the main street had to be closed.”

Mrs Perry has contacted the Ministry of Defence and Wiltshire Council engineers to ask for an action plan.
