Trowbridge group handed Cameron’s Big Society award
The long-running Trowbridge branch of an international charity is celebrating after its work was recognised by the Prime Minister.
The St Vincent de Paul Society, a Catholic group which has given practical help to people facing poverty for over 200 years, has been given a Big Society Award by David Cameron.
The Trowbridge conference of the charity, run from St John the Baptist Catholic Church, celebrated its 60th anniversary last year.
The conference also helps in Westbury and its president, Vivien Bath, said: “It’s great to get this as people often don’t know about us because we tend to do things quietly.
“We help with the soup run on a Friday, and visit elderly and lonely people. If anybody requires financial help we see what their needs are and can put them in contact with right people.
“Anyone who needs help will be treated in the strictest confidence. There are 15 members of our conference, who meet every Friday at 6.45pm.”
