SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Marine back to winning ways at Clevedon

This Is Wiltshire: Dave Webb Dave Webb

DAVE Webb was left in delighted mood after Swindon Supermarine won their first Southern League outing since January 22 last night.

The South Marston side triumphed 2-1 at Clevedon in Division One South & West with Ash Edenborough putting the visitors in front in the first half.

A Chris Taylor second-half free kick from the right went all the way into the net to double the lead, before Issac Reid pulled one back for the Seasiders.

However, ultimately Marine held on and manager Webb was pleased to have three points in the bag.

“I’d take any sort of victory having not really played for three weeks,” he said.

“I was so pleased the game was on and I’m more pleased now that we’ve got three points.

“I think it was vital we played tonight before we go to Tiverton on Saturday which is going to be tough enough.

“Hopefully now we can go there and have a good go at them.”

Webb felt Marine got their tactics right on the night but admitted that fatigue had played its part in the second period.

“I had a good report on them and we knew they were going to play out from the back which they did even though it was a tricky pitch,” he said.

“We really did try and press them in the first half and it worked a treat. I thought we played well and had numerous opportunities to score.

“We lost a little bit of impetus in our play and a little bit of fitness, so in the second half we probably didn’t work as hard as we did in the first half.

“We had a tense last 20 minutes and had opportunities to score and although we didn’t take them, we managed to nudge through.”

Marine face four more fixtures before the end of February, ahead of eight in March and a further five in April due a string of recent postponements.
