Support for keeping Westbury's historic buildings in use in the town centre was confirmed when full details of the town's campus consultation were unveiled at an Westbury Area Board meeting.

A presentation on the latest consultation, which ran from August to November last year, revealed that four out of five people quizzed wanted to keep the swimming pool, library and Leighton sports centre.

Almost 80 per cent of the replies to the consultation, which was completed by more than 1,000 people, were in favour of the three-site campus in option one.

The Community Operations Board also told the area board that locals were concerned about the effect on the viability of the town centre if a campus was sited elsewhere.

Matthew Woolford, campus team representative on the board, said: “We received 1,045 responses to the second round consultation, which is one of the highest responses in Wiltshire. We were really pleased by that.

“From the responses it was clear what the people in Westbury wanted, with the first option for a campus spread across three sites the most popular.

“People were saying that the pool contributed to the vibrancy of the town centre and there was a feeling that the town centre needed support and attention.

“The next step will now be for the COB to talk to service providers in the town about facilities they want to see.”

The area board voted in favour of taking option one forward and members of the COB will now start to develop detailed plans to come back to the area board this year.

Area board member Cllr David Jenkins said: “The process does take time, but it’s a wonderful opportunity and I hope the town will embrace this opportunity.”
