As rain and winds lashed Wiltshire, traffic delays were expected after a lorry toppled over on the B4042 Brinkworth Road.

The lorry belonging to Tesco, which was pulling a Eddie Stobart trailer filled with hay bales, slipped and sunk on a soft verge between Brinkworth and Royal Wootton Bassett and toppled in to the neighbouring field.

Sergeant Martin Alvis, of Malmesbury Police, said: “It’s a very soft verge and the lorry was travelling towards Wootton Bassett and the verge slipped away with the lorry.

“The road is open but there will be considerable delays.”

The A342 road at Lydeway, near Devizes, is closed at the moment after a tree brought down power lines.

Wiltshire Council said that it is hoped the road will be open by 5pm but at the moment motorists are having to find alternative routes.

A fallen tree was blocking the A346 at Cadley, near Marlborough, causing delays and other trees have been reported down throughout the area, including at Rowde Common and at the Longfield roundabout, Trowbridge, causing queues back into the town.

There is flooding at the A338 High Street, Collingbourne Ducis, between the Chick's Lane and A342 junctions.

Winds have been gusting up to 100mph through the region as the latest Atlantic storm hits southern England.
