Devizes MP Claire Perry showed she had pedal power when she took part in a 24- hour charity spinathon.

Mrs Perry got on her bike to support the Bag4Sport Foundation, which raises money for grass roots sport.

She said she wished she had taken to two wheels rather than four earlier in the day, as her car had broken down and she had to get a lift to Route2Fitness Gym on the Hopton Industrial Estate for Saturday’s event.

Mrs Perry said: “I have been a supporter of Bag4Sport Foundation for a couple of years and so I was happy to be asked to take part in the spinathon. It does a very good job helping young people to take part in sport.”

She said she had become a keen road cyclist and often went out on rides of up to 40 miles from her home in Charlton St Peter, near Pewsey, when she was in her constituency at weekends.

Also taking part was her partner, Bill O’Neill, a professor of laser engineering at Downing College in Cambridge.

Professor O’Neill said the couple had met about a year ago, when he was visiting the House of Commons for a meeting about laser technology and industry.

Devizes Mayor Pete Smith also popped in for a swift ride on the one of static cycles, before he had to go to other engagements in the town.

He said: “I am always happy to support Bag4Sport Foundation. It is a fantastic charity.”

Teams from a number of businesses including Canburg, the Strakers estate agency, Charlton Baker accountants, Goughs solicitors and PH Camps, took part.

Bag4Sport Foundation director Andy Trusler said: “I would like to thank everyone who has given up their time to take part. “It is great to have the continued support of our MP and Mayor.”

He hopes the spinathon will raise about £6,000 for the charity.
