HOCKEY: Controversial draw for North Wilts

NORTH Wilts were pegged back late after a questionable short corner to draw 3-3 against Taunton Vale B in their Central Two league match.

Looking for revenge after the Somerset side’s narrow win at Greenbridge Road earlier in the season North Wilts came within two minutes of earning a win having come back from a goal down.

Leading 3-2 as the final whistle approached Vale scored from a controversially awarded short corner, beating Smith and Conneely on the line.

Darren Hillier and Steve Dixon went close in the early stages but it was Vale who struck first.

The home side capitalised on Tom Wilson’s misplaced pass to force a short corner. Neil Smith made an intial save from the home side’s slick routine but could do nothing about the rebound.

Wilts responded well and took control of possesion, equalising before half time through Max Bartholomew.

Wilts came out strongly in the second half, forcing a number of chances.

However it was Vale who scored next. Wilts succumbing to a series of short corners after a fast Vale break.

Man-of-the-match Chris Blow kept Wilts in the game with a vital goal line clearance soon after.

The value of Blow’s defensive work was shown almost immediately.

Wilts equalising after Hillier converted Wilson’s assist from an acute angle.

Bartholomew then smashed the away team into the lead following some great interchange play between Dan Connelly, Cameron Young, George Bull, Hillier and Dixon.

With time running out Wilts came under sustained Vale pressure from several shots and short corners.

Ultimately Wilts were unable to hold on for the win but were pleased to have earned a draw having been behind twice.

This weekend sees Wilts looking for an upset at home against second-placed Somerset Gryphons to maintain their good run of form.
