After standing relatively unused for four years, Malmesbury Town Hall’s market room has had a facelift to transform it into a community hub.

Town councillor Julie Exton, who campaigned for the facility, said she was excited to see the changes after volunteers piled into the room yesterday to redecorate, fit the kitchen, put in new electrics and convert the store room in to an office.

Coun Exton has organised for various groups, including the police, to use the room as a space to meet residents.

GreenSquare Housing let 16 staff members have a “work in the community day” to carry out the transformation task.

Coun Exton said: “It’s only another month now before the community hub will be officially open. I’m really excited.”

The creation of the hub was among the council’s main objectives in last May’s elections.

She said: “I have been trying to get a hub up and running for the last three or four years. It’s just a central place for people to hear more about the community groups and help available, so it will act as an information point that will be different to the tourist information centre as it will be for people living here.”

Jobs will also be posted on a board for local residents.
