Chippenham Scouts helped to launch a new hedge-laying project in Mortimores Wood last week.

The hedge in the woodland off Pewsham Way, owned by the Borough Lands charity, was planted 10 years ago by The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) in Trowbridge.

They are now teaching the 10th Chippenham Scout Group traditional techniques of hedge-laying to ensure growth continues. Eight scouts aged from 10 to 14, joined by volunteer leaders, were out for four hours on Friday.

TCV senior project officer Ben Rawlings said: “The aim is to transform the landscape and manage the hedge sustainably to maintain it as a good habitat for local wildlife.

“The Scouts picked up the skills really well.

“We will be returning to the hedge to reinvigorate it and maintain it.”
