Volunteers at Drews Pond Wood in Devizes are delighted with the amount raised towards rebuilding a streamside walk.

The wood was battered by storms last month and some 17 trees were blown down leaving the area dangerous for access.

The area is still cordoned off while work to the trees are made safe. The volunteer group managing the wood estimates work to rebuild the walk will cost about £4,000.

On Sunday it held a donation day at the wood and about 30 members of the public attended and donated £760.

With other money already collected the volunteer group has raised just over £1,000.

Stuart Hislop, leader of the volunteer group, said: “We are about a quarter of the way towards our total. We are really pleased with the response from the public and thank everyone who has contributed so far.

"People who visited us on Sunday said they they love what we do and the hard work we put in and this was an opportunity for them to show their appreciation. They could also see the level of devastation.”

Mr Hislop said people wishing to make donations can make cheques payable to Drews Pond Wood Project and post them to 25 Sarum Drive or call him on 07853 299074.
