ROYAL Wootton Bassett residents still have time to sign up to take part in the Mayor’s charity fun run to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Both adults and youngsters can take part in the event, which kicks off at 10am at the Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Football Club at Ballards Ash on Sunday, March 16.

The fun run has not been held in the town since 2011, and the Mayor, Linda Frost, was delighted that it would be held again this year.

She said: “It’s part of my fundraising for the year for Macmillan. I’ve done a number of things but I just wanted to do something which the whole family could get involved in.

“That’s why there is a 5k run and also a children’s fun run, which is just a lap of the rugby field.

“This race is ideal for all ages and abilities, whether you are a regular runner, a jogger or even a walker.”

From 10am, youngsters can take part in the fun run for under 12s, where they could win a prize if they come in the top three winners.

Every youngster will receive a medal for taking part.

At 10.30am the Mayor will start the adults on the five kilometre run, which will wind around the town through Saffron Close, Maple Drive, Lime Kiln, Coxstalls, Sprats Barn Crescent, Showfield and finally back to the sports ground to finish.

Medals and a kit bag will be given to all those who finish the course and there will be a trophy for the man and woman and first boy and girl to cross the finish line.

Proceeds from the charity fun run will go towards Linda’s chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support, which improves the lives of people who are affected by cancer.

Linda said: “I don’t think there are many families these days which haven’t been touched by cancer.

“It’s affected myself and my own family and friends throughout my life, so it’s quite a personal thing for me.

“Several years ago when my friend was suffering with cancer they were supported by a Macmillan nurse and it struck me that they don’t just take care of the person that is affected, but also the people supporting that person.

“That’s why I chose Macmillan rather than Cancer Research.”

There will also be cakes and refreshments available at the event and two prize raffles.

To sign up on the day, the registration fee for adults is £10 and for children under 16 is £5. It costs £2 for children under 12 to enter.
