CHURCHFIELDS Academy students had another chance to pay back the teachers yesterday in a soggy day of fun for Sport Relief.

Youngsters took it in turns to throw sodden sponges at their teachers at the end of a week of fundraising events to raise what money they can to change lives around the world.

Marek Koza, Key Stage 4 Coordinator for maths at Churchfields and organiser of the sponge the teachers event, said: “We do something like this most years and this year it fell to me to organise it. About nine staff have come forward and the children were charged a small amount to throw a sponge at one of us.

“It was fun and at least the weather was not as cold as it has been.

“Half of the money we raise will go to Sport Relief and the other half will be used so the PE department can buy a new trampoline. It’s good fun and it's raising money for a good cause.”

All week students at Churchfields have been going sports mad for Sport Relief after taking part in a number of different activities, including a battle between the staff and students in a cricket match, and a danceathon which wowed audiences where all those entering payed a fee of 20p to go towards vital funds.

On Sport Relief Day itself next Friday, students at Churchfields will be taking part in the Sport Relief Mile around the school field to raise the total even higher, and the day will also host the finals for the Year 7 inter-tutor group egg and spoon race.

100 UK SBS staff will be volunteering to receive donation calls from
people across the country

It’s not just schools getting involved in this year’s Sport Relief, with businesses around the town also getting involved.

UK Shared Business Services Ltd is taking part by hosting a call centre, where 100 members of staff will volunteer to receive calls by generous donators. Last year, UK SBS took donation calls for Comic Relief of more than £51,000, after receiving more than 1,500 calls during the evening.

In between receiving the calls staff will also be joining the fun and games with fundraising activities including Kerplunk Kup and a Connect 4 tournament.

Jonathan Preece, Chief Executive Officer at UK SBS, said: “We are a people business. Our rapid growth has been due to the professionalism and skills of our staff, and we are proud that they are eager to give up their personal time to be involved in such a worthy cause.”
