More than 3,000 people enjoyed handling newborn lambs at Wiltshire College, Lackham, last weekend on the 20th anniversary of its annual lambing weekends.

Students at the college organise eight hour shifts to care for their lambs and ewes throughout the day and night during lambing season.

Over the last ten days, 320 ewes have had a total of 610 lambs but the college is expecting as many again.

Stephanie Stephenson, director of customer services, said students loved being able to share their skills and knowledge with visitors.

She said: “I think everyone enjoys showing off the farm. The students were busy all weekend, driving the tractor and trailer around and supporting the visitors.

“It was a really happy atmosphere. Small children absolutely love being able to stroke a lamb and witness a birth. Some people waited for a long time to make sure they got to see one.

“There was a really lovely atmosphere at the home farm, where people were having picnics on the bales of straw and there were some tractors they could sit on.”

As well as newborn lambs, families saw sheep, pigs, dairy cows and deer, which could be hand-fed. Stalls sold souvenirs, farm produce and refreshments.

Visitors are welcome again this Saturday and Sunday, between 10am and 5pm, with the last entry at 4pm.

They are advised to bring suitable footwear for wet and muddy ground.

Mrs Stephenson said: “The weather is looking fairly good for this weekend, so we would really encourage people to see what’s going on.

“There’s not just lambs; there’s piglets and calves and some very noisy turkeys.

“The tractors are a huge hit with all the smaller children. If they are fascinated by the tractors, it’s a must-see. Some people think that’s the best bit.

“It will be a great day out for a lot of people on Mothering Sunday, as well.”

Entry is £20 per car, or £6 for adults and £4 for children and concessions. For more information, call on (01249) 466800.
