A CAMPAIGN to improve the safety of a road close to where Caitlin Hunt was killed after being hit by a bus last week is gathering momentum.

The nine-year-old was struck near to a raised section of Moredon Road and her parents want the road system to be made clearer to motorists to prevent anyone else from suffering the same fate.

Now the head of Moredon Speedwatch has come out in support of the campaign and been in contact with the family to help set up a petition on the issue.

Sarah Evans has said it is important something is done so further accidents can be prevented.

She said: “The problem is it is not a crossing but it looks to many people like it is. Because the road is on the same level as the pavement, people assume it is a crossing.

“It is a speed calming measure for which it is quite effective. This was not a speed related accident but it is vital we make sure at least something good comes from this tragedy.

“A lot of people have said this has been a problem for a while so I hope we can do something about it.”

As well as helping with the petition, Sarah is also organising a meeting between residents, councillors and the police to discuss what can be done.

“We have the crossing, which has traffic lights opposite the school, but as that is raised as well possibly this is where the confusion comes from,” said Sarah.

“I want to set up a meeting with the police, councillors and the council to see what we can do about this and have spoken with Caitlin’s mum about helping her with a petition.

“Hopefully, if we can get people behind it then something can be done before anything else happens.”

Coun Peter Watts (Lab, Rodbourne Cheney) said: “In my opinion the council officers should look at it and conduct a safety assessment on the whole shopping precinct to see what they can do to make the whole thing safer.

“I very much support the work of the Moredon Speedwatch and will be working with officers to help them with the assessment.”

Funds are still being collected for Caitlin’s funeral and over today and tomorrow Skin Kandy Tattoo Shop on Cheney Manor Road will be holding a series of events to raise money.

The online collection closed on Tuesday having raised more than £1,500. Money, however, can still be donated via the tins in the tattoo shop.
