The brother-in-law of car spares dealer Martin Dadd, who collapsed and died from an undetected heart condition, will run the London Marathon in his memory.
Mr Dadd, 41, of Lansdowne Crescent, Derry Hill, had the heart muscle disease cardiomyopathy and died in 2012.
Brother-in-law Tom Mason, 35, from Reading, is running the London race for the first time and has raised £1,500 for the Cardiomyopathy Association.
He hopes to reach £2,000 before the day of the marathon, on April 13.
He said: “Cardiomyopathy is the biggest killer of people under the age of 35.
"When you hear about people that just drop dead, it’s quite often cardiomyopathy. It’s a disease of the heart muscle and can be hereditary.”
Mr Mason, an officer at Soha Housing, Didcot, will be cheered on by Martin’s widow, Emma, and his sisters, Helen Butler and Joanna Tweedale.
He said: “I knew Martin since I was 15. He was more like a brother than a brother-in-law.”
Helen Butler, meanwhile, has a coffee morning at 3 The Street, Hullavington, on Monday, 9am to noon.
