Youngsters from Westbury Youth Centre have produced an animated film and documentary about the military war badges on the hillside at Fovant as part of a six-month project.

The group’s project is called Virtual Landscapes. Members have visited the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre to explore the archives and tour the centre.

They also took a trip to the Fovant Badges, near Salisbury, with an archaeologist to learn about the history of the location, climb to the top of the Iron Age hill fort and see the badges close up.

The films were devised, written and produced by the group, mentored by director Jamie McDine. The idea was for children to explore their heritage and use creativity to develop their artwork.

Westbury Youth development co-ordinator Sally Willox said: “The project started in September with a visit to the history centre to interest them and give the children a chance to find out more about the badges.”

Weekly workshops with Jamie McDine followed when they learnt how to use the software, before putting together two films based on what their learning about the badges.

Ms Willox said the children had been very interested and they had been dedicated in what they were doing.

“They have really enjoyed it and it has succeeded in developing their knowledge and skills base, as well as their interest in art and history.”

The group used animation, photography and film production techniques and are also completing their Bronze Art Award through the project. To watch the film see visit www.sparksite.co.uk
