WORK on building a new robotic dairy in Allington in the Pewsey Vale has unearthed some pre-historic archaeological items but nothing of great significance.
As part of the planning permission an archaeological dig is being undertaken and on Tuesday archaeologists from Wiltshire Council were called in to assess the finds.
Rachel Foster, assistant county archaeologist, said: “They found a few pre-historic pits and some linear features. The pits are likely to have been refuse pits and the linear features are ditches. The archaeological company undertaking the dig found a few bits of pre-historic flint, tiny bits of pottery and animal bones.
“It’s indicative that some activity was going on and potentially there could have been a nearby settlement, which is interesting as pre-historic areas that we know of tend to be north of Allington. Allington is known for its medieval origins.”
The archaeological dig is likely to be finished next week and the results of the analysis of the items found will be sent to Wiltshire Archaeology Services at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre in Chippenham and will be available for the public to view in about three months’ time. The artefacts are likely to be offered to a local museum.
The new dairy is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
