Former New Zealand rugby captain Sean Fitzpatrick spoke about his career during the annual sportsman’s dinner of Bishops Cannings Cricket Club.

He was the main speaker followed by Peter Bowler, ex-Somerset county cricket captain. A surprise act for the evening was the appearance of Katherine Jenkins tribute act, Tamsin Killen, singing opera.

Ed Davies, chairman of Bishops Cannings Cricket Club, said: “By common consent it was one of the best such evenings for years, and in particular, the two speakers were excellent.

“Sean Fitzpatrick is the icon of world rugby and his talk was inspirational.”

The dinner was held at Dauntsey’s School, West Lavington, on April 2 and attended by 400.

It is the main fundraiser for the club and Mr Davies thought at least £4,000 had been raised.

The club’s next event is a clay shoot, at Wellington Barn, Calstone, on May 16 with 36 teams of five competing.

It is raising money for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance, Devizes Opportunity Centre, Prostate Cancer and Myasthenia Gravis.
