IN A bid to raise money for children’s charity Barnardo’s and support NHS Sustainability Day 2014, Carillion staff at the Great Western Hospital held a day of action undertaking a series of events and initiatives to promote sustainability to both healthcare patients and staff.

One of the highlights for younger patients and visitors was the Barney Bear colouring competition to raise money for Barnardo’s where in return for a donation, children had the opportunity to show off their artistic skills with the chance of winning Barney himself, as well as a hamper full of goodies.

Colin Norman, general manager for The Hospital Company, was tasked with the difficult challenge of judging the competition from lots of entries but it was six year-old Finn Tucker who scooped the prize for his artistic efforts.

The day of action which took place late last month also involved staff at the hospital joining forces with Barnardo’s to organise a clothing collections for the local Barnardo’s store, a food bank collection for Swindon Foodbank, and a specially designed menu in its restaurants using locally sourced, seasonal and healthy ingredients. So far this year, the GWH has raised over £110 for Carillion’s charity partner Barnardo’s with lots of fundraising activities planned.
