Devizes goes bananas for Fairtrade
DEVIZES built on its reputation as one of the first Fairtrade towns in Wiltshire with a produce fair at the Corn Exchange on Saturday.
The fair was opened by Mayor Pete Smith, who presented the prizes for the schools Fairtrade art competition to overall winner Hannah Grey and Nursteed Primary School’s Year 3 for its group entry.
Other prizes were awarded to Rowde Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary. All the prizes were Fairtrade products donated by Sainsburys.
Chef Peter Vaughan gave a demonstration of how to cook a Brazilian Pulao using Fairtrade beans, nuts and rice with local vegetables.
Fairtrade Group members Peter Tolhurst and Jasper Selwyn wore banana suits to encourage people to come to the fair and sign the petition to Make Bananas Fair.
This is a campaign run by the Fairtrade Foundation to persuade the Government to take measures to stop a price war between supermarkets that has almost halved the price of bananas, while the cost of producing them has doubled.
