SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb says that the reward for winners of tomorrow’s clash could be massive.

The Webbs Wood Stadium side entertain leaders Merthyr Town with both teams desperate for victory.

Supermarine are chasing a place in the Southern League Division One South and West play-offs, while their Welsh visitors are clinging on to the summit by goal difference.

“These are the sort of games that football is all about,” Webb said. “If you can’t get up for a game like this then you shouldn’t be playing.

“The reward for the winner could be massive.”

The two sides clashed last year in the play-off semi-finals, Merthyr winning 4-3 on penalties after a dramatic injury-time penalty saved the Welsh side from crashing out in 90 minutes to the nine-men of Marine, Webb knows that result will add some spice to tomorrow’s fixture.

“We have always good games against Merthyr, it is always full of quality football and after what happened last year there will be a bit of an edge to it,” the Marine boss said.

“There are still going to be a few twists between now and the end of the season, the title and the race for the play-off places are going to go down to the final day of the season.”

Supermarine were set to discover whether or not their play-off destiny remained in their own hands last night as sixth placed Paulton Rovers faced Bishops Cleeve.

Following last Saturday’s 4-3 defeat at Stratford Town, Webb’s men were left relying on Shortwood and Paulton dropping points in their games in hand.

Shortwood’s 2-0 win over Godalming on Tuesday night lifted them in fourth place, while Paulton, prior to last night, were just one point behind the South Marston outfit.

But Webb believes that his side’s home form could be the key as two of the remaining three matches are at their Webbs Wood Stadium base.

“We have won our last four matches at home and we have kept four clean sheets,” Webb said. “Merthyr’s problems this season has been their away form - that is where they have been dropping points.

“I know that we haven’t beaten them in our recent meetings, but we can go into this match full of confidence.”

Merthyr will be keen to rediscover the form that saw them open up a nine point lead at the summit, but Cirencester have won their games in hand, while the Penydarren Park side drew 3-3 at Yate Town last Saturday followed by a 2-1 reverse at Taunton Town on Tuesday night.
