THE FUTURE of Wootton Bassett management team Jeff Roberts and his assistant Drew Youngsam is still in the balance as they try to sort out their future ahead of next season.

Roberts and Youngsam came in for the start of last season and have remodelled the playing squad as the club goes through a period of transition.

The club is in the process of moving to a new permanent home and currently plays their home games at the Corinium Stadium in Cirencester.

Last week Roberts had a meeting with the club’s committee to discuss the club’s progression next season with the hope of securing funding for the playing squad but was knocked back on his requests.

Roberts will be going back this week with further proposals but if he is unable to secure increased funds to bring in a players then he may leave Bassett.

“We don’t know if we’re going to be at the club next season,” Roberts told the Advertiser. “We are literally rebuilding a side, we have a nucelus of players and want to bring a bit more quality in.

“Obviously you need to pay a little bit of money to get some quality strikers in, defensively we’ve only conceded 50-odd goals, and we’ve only lost eight or nine games, if we’ve had a bit of quality upfront then we’d be higher than we are.

“We’ll take some proposals to the committee, not just about money, also certain players not showing commitment and training, we only train once a week at the moment and obviously we’d like to train more.”

The issues are more pressing as this Saturday is their last home game of the season against Kidlington. Only pride and their points total is left for Bassett now as their league position cannot change.

Despite the off-the-field problems Roberts says his side are still focused on getting the win that would see them do the double over their visitors this season.

“We played really well down there to be honest, we took the game to them, went down there and started straight off and surprised them quite a bit.

“It’s going to be a typical end of the season game with teams with nothing to play, you don’t go out to lose games and we’ll take to them game to them.

Roberts will be playing with his squad as a number of players are missing as the season comes to a close. They will be buoyed by the presence of Ryan Stanners who will be coming for the unavailable Sean Carter.
