SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Webb hails Supermarine for reaching the play-offs

SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb has hailed his side for making the play-offs for a second successive season.
However, the Webbs Wood Stadium side had to come from 3-1 down to Bishops Cleeve to win 5-3 to ensure that their campaign went into overtime.
After conceding in the opening minute, Supermarine hit back as Ash Edenborough hit the first of his hat-trick.
Cleeve netted two more before Josh Parsons struck twice and then Edenborough completed his treble.
The South Marston men will now travel to Merthyr Town tomorrow night, in a repeat of last year’s play-off semi-final, looking to book their place in the play-off final after the Welsh side were pipped to the Southern League Division One South and West title by Cirencester Town.
“It is a great achievement to be in the play-offs for a second year running and we will go to Merthyr and give it a real good go,” Webb said.
“I’m sure they were expecting, having had a nine-point lead, to have won the league, but congratulations to Cirencester on that.
“But I think that Merthyr will feel that they have another chance of promotion and come Tuesday night that will be their focus, so it is up to us to try and stop that.”
Having gone in at the break against Cleeve 3-2 down, the Marine boss felt that his would go and win the match.
“That goal just before the break gave a lift,” Webb said. “When I walked into the dressing room at half-time it was very loud.
“The lads were arguing about their performance in the first-half and point fingers you could see they were determined to put it right - it made my job easier.
“To be honest, half-times can be a little quiet, but on Saturday, it just flew by.”
Having tinkered with his formation in previous weeks, Webb reverted to the traditional 4-4-2 against his former Gloucester City teammate Chris Burns’ side.
“It stopped them from pressing us a bit and also got us going forward,” Webb said. “With the wind as well we were sitting a little deep and that allowed that to take the lead.
“But it was great to see how we hit back and the players deserve credit, not only for the win, but making sure we are in the play-offs.”
