A community project helping to transform the Waiblingen Way area of Devizes is in the running for a national award.

The project, a partnership with housing association Aster Communities and the Waiblingen Way Community and Neighbourhood Watch Group, has been shortlisted in the better neighbourhoods category of the National Housing Federation’s annual Community Impact Awards.

It will compete against two other schemes in regional judging today and the winner will go to the national finals in London on June 12.

The Waiblingen Way project was set up to improve the social and physical environment of the local neighbourhood.

The area had been blighted by a poor reputation for anti-social behaviour and crime.

A variety of community schemes – such as meetings and fun days, healthy living initiatives and tidy days – have been held.

Aster has also improved security at its properties, with new lighting, fencing and door entry systems.

Julian Paine, the Aster Communities regional director for Wiltshire, said: “This project is an excellent example of successful long-term partnership working between a community and local organisations.

“We’re delighted efforts of everyone involved have been recognised in this way.

“Although there’s still lots of work to be done, the Waiblingen Way Community Project is having a tremendous impact on the whole neighbourhood and that’s something we can all be extremely proud of.”
