A group of Malmesbury mothers will take on the MoonWalk in London this month, to support a mum of young children who has breast cancer.

After learning their 40-year-old friend, who does not want to be named, has the disease, Sarah Law, Sharon McQueen, Colette Moody, Jaana Laidlaw, Rebecca Nichols and Gill Webb set about raising money on her behalf.

Mrs Webb – mother to Malmesbury Primary School pupils Elliot, seven, and Daniel, five – said of their friend: “She has been remarkably brave.

“She’s had her surgery and initial chemotherapy, but it’s a long process and she’s got a young family.

“You do think it could be any of us who could have it. We felt that there was not a great deal we could do to help, but we wanted to do this walk to show support and raise money.

“Walking 26.2 miles is nothing compared to what she is going through.”

The group of fundraising mothers – all from Malmesbury, Great Som-erford or Little Somerford – have already raised £700 towards their night-time trek through the streets of London on May 10.

Money they raise will go to the Walk the Walk charity, which organises the MoonWalk events.

The group met through the National Childbirth Trust, mother and baby groups and Walter Powell School.

The theme of this year’s MoonWalk is rockabilly, so the walkers will dress up in a 1950s theme, with polka dots and rock ’n’ roll vintage clothing.

Since it was launched, Walk the Walk has raised more than £90 million for research into breast cancer and improving the lives of people with cancer.
