A man was taken to hospital this evening after a panel fell on him in an accident at the construction site of the new Regent Circus leisure complex.

Emergency services were called at around 9.45pm to assist the man, who was in his 40s, after the panel fell on him while he was on the first floor.

He suffered minor injuries to his lower legs and was taken to Great Western Hospital after firefighters had assisted in rescuing him from the building site, which is to be a new state-of-the-art bricklaying and construction centre for students.

A spokesman for South West Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a construction site near the former college site at around 9.45pm.

"The casualty, a man in his 40s, had had a panel fall on his lower leg on the first floor of the site. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to Great Western Hospital by ambulance."

A spokesman for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said: "We assisted the ambulance service with a casualty on the site and once we rescued him he was taken to hospital."

It is unclear at this stage what the man was doing on the site.
