SHRIVENHAM striker Steve Robertson believes that Dave Turner would have been over the moon with how their season went.

The Barrington Park side tragically and suddenly lost their manager at the start of February, but the forward feels that their old mentor would have been smiling down on them as Sam Collier and co steered them to a 15th place finish in Hellenic League Premier Division.

A superb run towards the end of the campaign – including a 3-2 victory over Highworth Town which Robertson said Turner would have loved – helped them achieve their pre-season goal.

“I think Dave would have been over the moon with how our season went,” Robertson said. “His aim at the start of the season was to avoid relegation.

“We did that, the last 10 games of the season were superb and hopefully we can all stick together next season.

“It has been a tough year for everyone at Shrivenham, we are all gutted at losing Dave.

“For a lot of these players they had known him since they were boys, but we all stuck together and helped each other through.

“We got together after he passed away and had a chat and decided to see the season out – it is what Dave would have wanted.”

Having got through a tough year with Sam Collier picking up the reins, Robertson is hoping that everyone will be back next term.

“Sam and Sharpy (Luke Sharps) kept the standards of Dave,” Robertson said.

“Sam wants to continue and I hope all the boys stick together for another year.

“I think personally I had a reasonable season, I would have it to be a bit better.

“But it was nice to have a full season under my belt because it was my first one since I had my knee surgery.

“The lows of the season speak for themselves, but the high points were winning the games we weren’t expected to get anything from.

“I know Dave would have loved us beating Highworth over Easter, we really deserved that win, getting one over your neighbours.

“And the last 10 matches too, I think we can all be pleased of how that went.”
