FAMILIES flocked to the Swindon and Cricklade Railway over the weekend to enjoy a family event.

The Blunsdon-based attraction drew hordes of people in the bank holiday sunshine.

Children went for free from May 3 to 5 every time an adult bought a ticket for £9 or a senior bought a ticket for £8.

A spokesman for the Swindon and Cricklade Railway said organisers were blessed with good weather which ensured an excellent turnout.

He said the railway is looking forward to hosting the next family day next month in June, when youngsters will be able to go free again from June 7 to June 8.

Steam trains ran each day from 10.30am to 4pm, and the main attraction was the GWR no 5637.

The steam trains run on a short section of the old Midland and South Western Junction Railway between Swindon and Cricklade.

The popular attraction was established after a group of enthusiasts formed the Swindon and Cricklade Railway Preservation Society in 1978. As well as steam trains, the station also runs diesel trains, and visitors can enjoy a round trip of more than four miles in the surrounding countryside.

The Swindon and Cricklade Railway is open from 11am to 4pm every Saturday and Sunday.
