A green Flag accredited Chippenham school is sharing its energy-saving skills through social media.

Hardenhuish pupils star in one of three films that explain how to keep track of and keep down energy costs. They were made by Wiltshire Council after working with a dedicated Hardenhuish pupil group and are being shared on YouTube.

It is one of the few secondary schools in Wiltshire to have reached the eco schools Green Flag standard of sustainability, having installed PV, a wind turbine, biomass boiler and LED lighting.

The footage shows how the school took the green message to the classroom by turning it into a maths data gathering exercise.

Assistant head David Clarke said: “Working with energy data in this way has been really beneficial.

“Not only have we saved money and raised the importance of reducing energy consumption among staff and pupils alike, but we have now been able to include the live systemslink data as part of our Year 8 Maths in the real world curriculum.

“This allows all pupils to learn from the data generated by the project and make their own suggestions about how to plan for a more sustainable future.”

Coun Toby Sturgis, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for the environment, said: “Electricity demand in schools continues to rise in response to the greater use of technology and security. Energy is a significant factor in any school’s budget.”

The partnership is part of a wider regional project called Sustainability Across the Common Space project.
