A DOCTOR suspended from the Great Western Hospital after being convicted of taking indecent images of a child at a swimming pool will appear before a panel to determine whether he is fit to practice medicine.

Dr Michael Chongkee Lok, who had worked as a specialty registrar in the Emergency Department since 2004, was suspended on January 7, 2013 by the hospital.

The 50-year-old, from Kingwood, later admitted filming people on a phone at Bath University Sports Village in November and December 2012.

At Bristol Crown Court he also pleaded guilty to seven counts of voyeurism .

Lok will now appear in front of a fitness to practice panel in Manchester, between May 14 and 16, which will determine whether he should be allowed to return to work.

A Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service spokesman said: “The panel will inquire into the allegation that in May 2013 at Bath and Wansdyke Magistrates Court Dr Lok was convicted of, taking an indecent photograph or pseudo-photograph of a child and seven counts of voyeurism.

“It is alleged that in June 2013 at Bristol Crown Court, Dr Lok was sentenced in respect of his convictions to a community sentence with supervision for a period of three years, participation in Thames Valley Sex Offenders Programme.

This is as directed for up to 42 days and to remain on the Sex Offenders register for a period of five years, and a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for a period of five years under sections of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

“The above reflects the allegation as it stands at the start of the hearing.

“The allegation may be amended as the hearing proceeds and when findings of fact are made by the panel.”

Following his conviction, Lok was sentenced to a three-year community order, which includes a sex offenders treatment programme.

He was also given a sexual offences prevention order and placed on the sex offenders register for five years.

At the time of sentencing Oonagh Fitzgerald, director of workforce and education at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said Dr Lok would not be returning to the trust.

“As soon as we were informed of the charges, the member of staff was immediately suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation and court case,” she said.

“Now this is complete, we will conclude disciplinary proceedings for gross misconduct.

“Dr Lok will not be returning to work in our trust.”
