The community of Bishops Cannings will have the chance to see how the agricultural industry operates in their area on Open Farm Sunday, June 15, when local farmers Jonny and Rachael Rider welcome them onto their land.
The event, which is open to the public, is the culmination of the Bishops Cannings parish festival and Mr and Mrs Rider will have been showing some 300 children around the farm during the previous week.
Local farmer Elizabeth Frearson, who is helping to organise the event, said: “Starting with a pet service at 11am taken by local retired priest, Canon Royle, there then follows a full family dog show, held by Macqueen Veterinary Centre to raise funds for the Cinnamon Trust.
“In the orchard, a full display of Jonny and Rachael’s rare breed farm animals and poultry can be seen, with children able to get up really close. In the arena, a flying display will demonstrate the wonderful delights of hawks and owls followed by the somewhat more noisy but wonderfully traditional antics of the Devizes Jubilee Morris Dancers.
“Tucked away for safekeeping from all the animals and visiting dogs will be the Bishops Cannings Bake Off, which anybody can enter with their home-baked goodies including a class entitled Dad’s Favourite Pud in recognition of it being Father’s Day. Dads and their families can also pit their wits and strength against each other in a bonkers family obstacle course.”
