Hundreds of families enjoyed a fascinating and exciting range of activities at The Mead Community Primary School’s community science and technology day.

The event on Saturday, which was organised and funded by Friends of the Mead School and Awards for All in partnership with the Trowbridge school, included more than 50 free interactive activities.

Highlights included a water piano, planetarium, rocket workshops, fitness testing, dissection demonstrations, lego robots, fingerprinting, 3D printer, cooking demonstrations, optical illusions and thermal imaging.

The event also featured the Great Mead Bake Off, with adults and children competing to make the best science-themed cakes, and a live radio station run by the children.

Andrew March, who attended with his children Rory, four, and Will, 17 months, said: “It’s been a fabulous day and they have done a fantastic job organising it. There was so much to do and it’s great that it is all free.”

Vanessa Beesley, who visited the school with husband Neil and their children Eva, eight, and Daniel, two, said: “It’s been really good and there have been lots of fascinating hands on activities for the children to do.

“The planetarium was excellent and it’s great to have something like this, as the children really get something out of it. You can’t beat the weather we’ve had for it either.”

There were also talks throughout the day in the school’s interactive lecture theatre from speakers such as science broadcaster and journalist Sarah Cruddas and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Mel Jacob, chairman of the board of directors, said: “It went really well and it was great to see so many families coming along and getting involved in all the different activities together.

“We hope the children have got some fantastic experiences out of the day and are even more excited by science and technology.

"We were pleased to see people from other schools come along, as we wanted to engage with the whole community.”

Executive headteacher Lyssy Bolton said: “I’m delighted that so many people have come along and the day has been packed full of exciting and engaging opportunities for the children to enjoy science and technology in new ways.”
