THE road from Chiseldon to Wroughton is currently closed as emergency services recover an overturned truck.

In the early hours of the morning the lorry, which had been carrying compost, came off the B4005 and landed on its side in a hedge.

The driver had to be cut free from the vehicle and police are currently dispatching heavy equipment to dismantle the lorry and recover it.

Fire crews used specialist cutting equipment to free the 59-year-old male driver, whose legs were trapped.

He was treated at the scene before being taken by land to Great Western Hospital, although the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

The lorry was carrying about 20 tonnes of fertilizer which has spilled into a field adjacent to the road.

It is expected police will be at the scene for the next couple of hours

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: "We were called to a single vehicle road traffic collision on the B4005 at 6.49am.

"The lorry has left the road and gone into a hedge. The driver was trapped and fire and ambulance were in attendance.

"The road was partially closed with traffic able to move past with officers using hand signals.

"The road is now closed for the recovery operation because there are some large units needed to tip the truck back onto its side."

A spokesman for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said: “We received a call from the police shortly before 7am regarding an overturned lorry.

“We sent out two appliances, one from Drove road and the other from Stratton. We also sent the emergency support unit from Chippenham as it contains heavy rescue gear.

“Crews cut out a male from the lorry using hydraulic equipment and left him in the care of the ambulance.”
