New coach set-down points in Devizes are already boosting the number of visitors to the town.

Devizes Area Tourism Partnership won the accolade for the town in March and say more operators are now visiting the town.

The two new set-down points in New Park Street are close to the public toilets in West Central car park.

Passengers get off the coaches, which then park in The Wharf or Station Road car parks.

The set down points are close to The Castle Hotel in New Park Street which has benefited by extra business.

Manager John Hume said: “We have had Danish visitors staying with us over the past two weeks. They have taken 20 rooms and they have done boat trips on the canal, been on the Wadworth Brewery tour and enjoyed Devizes market.

"They have booked three further weeks this year and five weeks in 2015.

“Without the coach set-down points we wouldn’t have done as well as we have done.”

Wiltshire Museum in Long Street has also welcomed increased numbers of visitors.

Director David Dawson said: “Each coach is generating £500 to the local economy, with 50 passengers spending at least £10 per head on tea, coffee, lunch and admission charges.”

Before the set-down points were created DATP member Carol Brandon said the town had just one coach party a month but in the past week four coaches visited.

Coach Friendly Status was awarded by the Confederation of Passenger Transport. John Burch, area manager for the South West, said: “The town centre and market areas are extremely welcoming to coach parties and there really is something for everyone.”

Mayor Sarah Bridewell said: “The amount of tourism and the potential amount of money coming into the town is putting Devizes on the map. It’s down to the hard work of DATP.”
