Police are hunting a six-foot attacker who stabbed a man in Melksham on Sunday.
The victim was approached from behind near the Bath Road underpass at 3am, when he was punched in the stomach and stabbed in the inner thigh.
The assailant, who was unknown to the victim, then ran off towards the town centre.
The man is described as white, around 6ft, wearing a light grey hoodie, dark trousers and light trainers.
His victim was treated at the scene for a stab wound to his right leg, and did not require hospital treatment.
Detective Sergeant Andy Morley said: "I'd ask anyone who was on Bath Road or the surrounding areas in the early hours of Sunday morning to come forward with any information they may have.
"Thankfully, the victim was not badly hurt but we are treating this extremely seriously.
"I'd like to reassure the local community that incidents such as this are rare and we are doing all we can to find the person responsible for this crime."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
