THE 2014 Wiltshire Track & Field Championships proved to be a family affair for several of the county’s leading athletes, writes Kevin Fahey.

The Howorths of Hilperton, the Wosikas, also from Hilperton, and the Watling sisters from Lacock all performed superbly to finish among the medals.

In addition there were numerous other top performances from the likes of Grace Davies-Redmond, Zoe Mattacks and Will Kennedy as Team Bath athletes won a staggering 25 gold medals, 17 silvers and 9 bronzes at Tidworth.

Sisters Yasmin and Ariana Watling, students at St Marys School in Calne, both struck gold with 15-year-old Yasmin winning the U17 girl’s 1500m in 5.01.9 and 13-year-old Ariana lifting the U15 girls’ 800m title in 2.32.63.

For the Wosikas it was a sister and brother double act with 14-year-old Caitlin, who is a student at John of Gaunt School, winning the U15 girls’ 1500m in the excellent time of 4.48.89, carving another four seconds off her personal best and moving into second in the South West rankings.

In addition, younger brother Jack claimed the U13 boys’ 1500m in 5:26.32.

The Howorth brothers are no strangers to success after enjoying a fine cross country season and on Saturday, 11-year-old Rory set the standard by winning the U13 boys’ high jump with 1.45m and the 75m hurdles in 13.27secs.

14-year-old John then won the U15 boys’ 1500m in 4:29.82, with twin Robert taking bronze medals in the 800m in 2.10.66 and shot with 8.27m.

Training partner Emily Dixon struck double gold in the senior women’s 100m hurdles.

Westbury-based thrower Ellie-J Webb, who is rated seventh in the UK rankings with her PB of 52.69m last month, dominated the U17 girls’ hammer to win with 50.84m.
