Police have thanked members of the public in Calne who helped them track down a 51-year-old man thought to be over the drink-drive limit.

Two people phoned and described the man to police. He was later arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a car while under the influence of alcohol.

The man, from Calne, was driving a blue Suzuki Alto and was first seen after 5pm on May 20 when he reversed into a car parked in Anchor Road and drove away.

Police began a search of the area before receiving a second call at 5.30pm from someone who said they had seen a man in his car in The Pippin drinking vodka.

He was found asleep in his car at the Tesco Express store, Harrier Close, around 6pm and police say when he was breathalysed he was over the drink-drive limit. The man will appear at North West Wiltshire Magistrates’ Court on June 5.

The public also came to the aid of Calne police and staff at the Tesco Express store on May 28 when they helped detain teenagers believed to have been shoplifting.

A 15-year-old from Staines, Middlesex, and a 14-year-old from Windsor, Berkshire, were challenged by staff at 1.20pm. Two men and a woman helped staff keep the teenagers at the store until police arrived and they were taken into custody at Melksham Police Station.

The 15-year-old received a youth caution after admitting the theft and the 14-year-old, who denies the charge, will be at North West Wiltshire Magistrates’ Court on June 24.
