Former top motocross rider Mark Hucklebridge will break off his cancer treatment so he can race again this weekend.

Hundreds of competitors and fans from the racing world are coming to support Mr Hucklebridge’s campaign to raise £50,000 this year for the Royal United Hospital’s Forever Friends Appeal.

A Friends of Huck event will be held at the Marshfield motocross track on Saturday and Sunday.

Mr Hucklebridge, 35, from Colerne, thought he had beaten cancer in 2010, but scans this year revealed it was back and is inoperable.

In March, he took part in the Bath Half Marathon with wife Emma, despite undergoing chemotherapy at the time. Now he will postpone his chemo for a week to ride in this weekend’s event.

His post on Facebook read: “My oncologist said I have to do the things I want to do, so I have put my chemo back one week so me and Emma can race.

“I am really looking forward to riding with my mates again. I am going all out for the win. Ha ha.”

Friends of Huck organiser Kevin Spencer said: “There’ll be over 200 competitors, all former and current friends of Mark’s coming back to ride for him.”

The Mike Brown Memorial Motocross event – held on Good Friday at Marshfield – has also boosted the Forever Friends Appeal.

Organisers MotoXtreme and Marshfield Motocross Club presented a cheque for more than £16,000 last week.

The appeal, for a pioneering cancer centre, is nearing £6m of its £8.5m goal.

Jo Jones, corporate officer for the appeal, said: “Mark is a truly inspiring individual. He has an extremely supportive network of friends, family and colleagues who are determined to help him with his fundraising efforts for the new cancer centre.”

Money was raised with a raffle, auction and entrance takings. Mr Hucklebridge’s old team, Kawasaki, donated a KX85 off-road motorcycle to the auction and it was sold, for £3,000, to enthusiast Josh McGill, who at once gave it back to Mr Hucklebridge’s seven-year-old son, Charlie.

This weekend’s races are from 11am to 6pm each day. On Saturday they will be followed by live music, an auction and horse race night. Entry is £5.
