Twelve-year-old Jake Bray stunned his mother when he was the first junior to complete the Race for Life event.
It was the first time Jake, of Brickley Lane, Devizes, had run a major event and he came sixth out of 3,000 runners at Lydiard Park, Swindon, on June 1, running 5km in 24 minutes. The Devizes School pupil ran with his friends, Ben and Yazmine Oliver and their mother Azurah in memory of his grandfather, Cyril Bray, who died of cancer last year.
Cyril was in his eighties and was a shepherd at Cameron Naughton’s farm in Bishops Cannings. Jake’s mum, Helen Bray, was standing by the finish line.
She said: “The first serious runners started to finish the race, all adults, and suddenly everyone started shouting louder, and as I leaned to see who was coming it was my son sprinting to the finish.”
