Wiltshire Council has scaled back its plans to axe all the county’s mini-recycling centres, with 14 town centre sites now set to remain.
In March the council announced plans to close 126 centres across Wiltshire in a bid to save £100,000, saying kerbside recycling meant they were no longer required.
However, following a public consultation, it has now been revealed 14 of the larger sites will stay in a 12-month trial.
A statement sent out to councillors said: “Some residents continue to combine trips to local supermarkets and town centres (where many of these larger sites are located) with bringing excess recycling to these sites.
“These sites typically use larger ‘skip-type’ containers and are serviced by different vehicles to smaller sites which use wheeled bin containers. That vehicle will be decommissioned now that the smaller sites have been removed and will provide contract savings.”
Remaining sites are mostly in supermarket car parks and will continue to accept glass, cans and paper.
The remaining sites include:
- Sainsbury's, Bradford on Avon, Melksham and Chippenham;
- The Pippin car park, Calne;
- Morrisons, Chippenham and Devizes;
- Car park, Corsham;
- Borough Fields, Royal Wootton Bassett;
- Station Yard, Malmsbury.
