I poached nobody, says new hair salon boss

This Is Wiltshire: Members of the Salon 52 team – Sarah Keep, Helen Kirby, Kelly Goodheart and Abby Randall Members of the Salon 52 team – Sarah Keep, Helen Kirby, Kelly Goodheart and Abby Randall

A NEW hair salon in Old Town is aiming to be a cut above the rest.

Salon 52, in Michaels Way, is run by Kelly Goodheart who is joined by nine members of staff from long-standing Old Town business Talk Of The Town, in Devizes Road, which closed on Wednesday.

Salon 52 offers hair treatments for men and women.

Kelly was previously based at Talk Of The Town but has been self-employed working from Aspire, in Wood Street, for the past two years.

She said: “We are trying to create a really good affordable luxury service with a great team of self-employed girls.

“We have put a lot of effort into getting everything ready and we really hope that the business will be a big success as we are very proud of Salon 52.

“The location is great, we have lots of parking nearby and Old Town is a fantastic place for a salon.

“We’ve had good feedback since opening on Tuesday.

“The girls are very motivated and are keen to make our customers feel as comfortable as possible.

“They have a good number of clients and we are keen to welcome more. “I was self-employed and then some of the girls from Talk Of The Town approached, worried about how things were going there.

“They said they’d like to work with me again in the future, so it was never a case of staff being poached.”

Talk Of The Town, which had been running since 1968, closed after allegedly going into liquidation.

A sign posted in the salon’s window read: “Please note that Talk Of The Town has ceased trading due to circumstances out of the company’s control.

“This has been a very upsetting time for staff members and myself. I would like to thank all our staff.

“I would like to thank all our customers over the many years. Please accept our heartfelt apologies.”

Former staff member Lee Fordom, who now works for Salon 52, believes Talk of the Town started suffering when owner Simon Holmes moved to Australia last August.

Lee said: “It was fine to begin with when he moved to Australia but it was very difficult to get answers when we had questions or needed help after a while.

“There was mention of Salon 52 poaching staff from Talk Of The Town – that wasn’t the case, we approached Kelly as we said we were not happy where we were.”

To be fair, it happens all the time. It's what managers and staff are for.

Old Town Business forced to close by its own family member

If Miss Goodheart didn't poach the staff who else other than Talk of the Town staff work at the new salon.
Just a few facts about the owner Miss Goodheart
She was a partner in Talk of the Town which ended Oct 2012 as she had over drawn from the business £40,000 and refused to repay the money.
The partner Simon Holmes took the business on so to keep people employed. Even though he was moving to Australia,

He let Miss Goodheart stay on to build up a clientele,
She only left Talk of the Town in Nov 2013. So she has not worked in Aspire for two years as she has stated. More like 7 months.

Mr Holmes found a buyer, so Talk of the Town salon would have investment as it was looking dated, and needed proper management, so to secure its future.

Miss Goodheart then scared the buyer off with rumours of taking the existing staff and opening a salon, which now has turned out to be true.

This is the truth, and if any of the Talk of the Town customers want to blame anyone for this closure look no further than kelly Goodheart

It has been an ongoing family feud. That everyone who knows the family have witnessed.

As somebody who has worked in that business for many years, myself as well as other members have witnessed also what's gone on.

I would like to draw your attention to a false accusation you have just made about 'Miss Goodheart' leaving in November 2013, if you were a little more proactive you would do your research and find out that in actual fact, it was at the end of 2012 she left. She left before any of us went self-employed which was last January, and left before Simon went to Australia last August.

Kelly is NOT to blame. Talk of the town was going down hill, a few of us took up Kelly's offer for security reasons as well as moving our business forward. TOTT was looking shabby and Mr Holmes didn't exactly rush to do anything about it, we had an offer to go to a brand new salon and a better way of working, why would anybody jeopardise their own business? Why do you think we all decided to jump ship? Because of this. The salon has gone into liquidation and no one is to blame other than Simon. If you had the pleasure of working for that man you will realise that he is not cut out to run a business, it was handed to him and he had one job to look after it and look how it's ended up. The salon would have ended sooner or later, unfortunately it ended a lot sooner than expected.

And as for the debt, maybe you should do your research and look into Mr Holmes accounts and records, then you'll workout how much debt that man was actually in. Debt HE put himself into which could have been avoided but he chose to ignore it. As weeks went by bills were adding up and debt was soon growing.

We are all entitled to our own opinions. But it's nothing but an 'opinion'. And your opinion is backed up by bitterness as you were clearly lured into believing Mr Holmes' lies. Kelly Goodheart has the right head and heart for this business and all of us wish her nothing but the best.

As for Simon? Well, I hope he enjoys his last cocktail on the beach.

Do you realize what it must have been like to see a family business dragged down the way it was once simon took ownership of it? He did everything he did to get him and his family to Australia an sod the consequences. Money was owed left right and centre by that man. And not just little everyday bills. He bled the place dry and then strung everyone along until it just got to the point where nothing could save the place. And yes a buyer was found but it was only when the extent of the debt against the business came to light which Simon had run up, the buyer very rightly so pulled out. He was trying to hide the fact it was so in debt! That man and his wife havnt got an ounce of decency between them and as much as I hope they have to give up all they've got now. They won't be very welcome back in Swindon. The people that have lost their jobs and also the people like me who had to leave a job I had for so long didn't want any of this to happen. But as I said before we were compleaty strung along by Simon and fed false information constantly. It's really neither here nor there now really as it's over and it's pointless going over it all. But I have a lot of respect for Kelly and her husband and to pull through all of this and come out where they have with a amazing new salon and somewhere great to work I think it took a lot of courage and I don't want to see disrespectful comments like the one I saw.

This isn't about poaching or family feuds, or ex employees bad mouthing the salon. This is about the owner who doesn't know or care enough to invest in this company and it's workers.
It's been on a slippery slope for some time and your blinded by your loyalty to the man who caused all this.

I believe the new shop is brilliant and I recommend it to both ladies and gents, defiantly a modern high street salon that is going to be very successful and I wish all employees the best of luck!

I love a Swindon Salon story, nothing else seems to get our residents going more than a Salon Spat.

Remember the hair extensions from hell story last month?

Maybe we should get all the Salons and their staff around Swindon to have a face off like the News Teams in Anchorman?

10 quid to the first hair dresser to whip out a trident!

Who wouldn't pay to see that? We could get in on at the Oasis instead of one of the many boxing matching?

It is times like this I am glad to be very nearly bald.

Very brave words sat behind computer, wonder if you said that to their face before they left? I for one would welcome them home with open arms at any point!

Just a few facts about the owner Miss Goodheart She was a partner in Talk of the Town which ended Oct 2012 as she had over drawn from the business £40,000 and refused to repay the money. The partner Simon Holmes took the business on so to keep people employed. Even though he was moving to Australia, He let Miss Goodheart stay on to build up a clientele, She only left Talk of the Town in Nov 2013. This is the truth, and if any of the Talk of the Town customers want to blame anyone for this closure look no further than kelly Goodheart It has been an ongoing family feud. That everyone who knows the family have witnessed.[/p][/quote]Who ever you are who "knows the family". Maybe you should get all of your facts right before you go saying things like that!!!!!! I'm shocked. Having worked at talk of the town for a very long time I had witnessed a lot if things and one thing anyone can be assured of is that Kelly is in no way to blame for this! To be fair, it happens all the time. It's what managers and staff are for.
Exactly, owners own the shares in the business, they appoint managers run it. Companies can be owned by multiple shareholders, those shareholder can live anywhere in the world!

TalkoftheTown says...

Statement :
I was not going to respond but i cannot sit back and read the ridicules comments from my sister and some ex salon members.
I was in a no win situation when i decided to move to OZ. I could of just left as my sister owed me a year off as she had taken a year off.
I cared about the people that I was leaving behind in the shop. Although reading some of these comments from them i wished i hadn't.

My sister Kelly left talk of the town owing it a lot of money. Which can be proved through the FINAL accounts. If necessary. So I can back up this claim.

I took on her debt she left in the shop and let her walk away from her responsibilities as a partner in the business, if i hadn't the shop would of shut at that point.
All the staff would of been without work. That is also a fact.

She refused to repay the money back, and said she could not run the shop on her own because she had two children, So the shop would of closed.

She also did leave the salon in October 2013
I also have an email to prove that, as I let her work there for free for a year after the partnership ended to build up a clientele, as she never did much hairdressing in the salon.
So she is lying saying she worked for Aspire for two years, it obviously would make her look worse if she just left opened a salon took the staff so ruined the family business. But that is exactly what she did.
I had a buyer for talk of the town, as i knew it would be difficult to run it from Australia.
But my sister Kelly also ruined that sale when she found out, by spreading rumours of taking staff and opening a shop. Which has now turned out to be true. I have an email from the buyer stating this, so this also can be proven.

There was debt on talk of the town which has been cleared since Kelly left. It was just starting to go back into profit. Then money would of been spent on it.
But when 9 members of staff leave, it become impossible to continue.

It is true all my interest was not in talk of the town and I was not going to re-invest in it again until it was in profit, which if I was back in Swindon it would of been done sooner.
So I can't blame the staff for wanting somewhere nicer to work, I totally understand that, I had only taken the business on to stop it closing.
I was hoping to sell it to someone who had the passion to carry it on, but if i had sold after what had happened, i would of had to guarantee the rent, which after what my sister had just done to ruin the sale i was not prepared to do, so i could not even sell it.

It was offered back to my father but he was going to bring kelly back in which I did not agree with as she had just walked away from her responsibilities and debt, the feud between us was the downfall of this shop.
it is very hurtful when you see your own sister lying to make herself look better,

I did draw back some of the money in 2011 that was owed from the business otherwise she would of owed even more money on the FINAL accounts.

In hindsight i should of just made her pay the whole money back, and made her run the place as she was meant to be an equal partner, and I was still owed a year off.
But it is hard when it is family. And that was paying my fathers pension.

A lot goes on behind the scenes in a family business, and lots of rumours and accusations have been made. but what i have said above can be backed up with evidence and the FINAL accounts of the partnership.
This shop now has destroyed this family, I would say all sides are to blame, each of them handling things wrong.
There will never be a happy ending and that's a shame.

Talk of the Town has employed and trained a lot of people over the past 46 year, with the large majority leaving on very good terms and even starting there own businesses, but in business you always get the odd disgruntled employee who left many years ago who try and stick the knife in.
This could be looked at as slanderous and libellous.
Everything above can be proven its not here say or gossip. so be careful to dispute something that you cannot prove. Just because someone has gossiped and told you a lie, or you feel loyal to them.

I am not going to respond after this, unless Kelly wants me to produce the evidence but this needed to be said.
It's hard to defend yourself when you live the other side of the world.
But what I have said above is the truth, and can be backed up not by words or gossip but by paperwork and emails.

What's done is done now and we need to all move on.
If the advert want permission to print this comment you can. I can back up every word. I would say I don't like airing this in public but i never started it. I have a right to defend what is being said about us.
I'm sorry to talk of the town customers and the loyal staff that stayed on.
