THE latest construction project at Swindon College aims to improve the learning experience for all students with special educational needs.

The refurbishment of the college’s Lyra building began earlier this month.

It follows work on a new construction centre for brick and plastering students, which is on course to be ready for September.

The new-look Lyra building will ensure the college leads the way in providing education for those with learning disabilities.

It will have both indoor and outdoor facilities.

A spokeswoman said: “After securing the funding for this work we have worked closely with OC Architects to design a space that will meet the needs of our learners.

“This work includes a full refit of a specialised kitchen area and new outdoor area, as well as state-of-the-art learning technologies.

“These changes will ensure the continued education of our learners as well as offer opportunities to develop a robust and exciting curriculum.

“This is a very exciting period for learners and staff with the work being finished in time for the start of term in September, with plans to have a grand launch already under way.”

The overall cost of all the building work at the college is in the region of £2.6m, a third of which came from a Government grant.

Despite an initial delay on starting the construction centre due to the heavy rain in February, work is progressing well.

When complete the building will be 800sq ft and two storeys high.

It will consist of a main area for brickwork as well as 26 plastering bays with the facilities to teach 75 students at a time.

Students are already benefiting from the building as a viewpoint has been built and some are being allowed on site to examine the work being done.

Vice-principal Nick Letchet said: “This is a really exciting development for the college.

“It is important that our students are equipped with the right level of skills and expertise required by the construction sector in Swindon.

“The centre will add to our construction facilities and help us to attract even more students.”
