Easton Royal pupils’ charity effort after crash tragedy

Youngsters at Easton Royal Primary School will walk in memory of grandmother Anne Deeks, who died in a collision on the A4, to raise awareness of road safety charity Brake.
Mrs Deeks’ grandchildren, nine-year-old Harrison and six-year-old Tyler, go to Easton Royal School and the school came up with the idea of the sponsored walk when their mother, Elaine Owen, said she was doing a 10km run in London.
Mrs Deeks, 69, of Sagecroft in Thatcham, was killed in a collision between Newbury and Hungerford on February 26 while on the way to her daughter’s house in Old Hospital Road in Pewsey.
Mrs Owen said: “It was a terrible shock. This is the first person the boys have lost and it was my mum, who they were very close to.
“To have a grandparent who dies because they get old is a bit easier to understand but this was completely unexpected.”
After Mrs Deeks’ death the family was supported by Brake and now 40-year-old Mrs Owen, who runs her own interior design company, is fundraising for the charity.
She said: “Brake has been a good support to me and the children and gave them books afterwards that helped them understand what they were feeling and that it was okay to have those thoughts.”
On July 2, Harrison and Tyler, along with the other pupils at Easton Royal Primary School, will walk one mile from the school to the village hall and back to raise awareness of the charity.
Pupils will be wearing high-visibility jackets as well as Brake T-shirts and older pupils will be carrying buckets to collect donations from villagers.
Just over a week later, Mrs Owen will be running the British 10k in London and in October she will take part in the Moonride, an 80k bike ride around London.
She said: “I’ve been overwhelmed by the support. It is a lovely school and they came up with the idea of the walk on their own.”
