Sherston's pop-up day lands honour - and £650 for village school

Friends of Sherston School have scooped a prestigious award for their pop-up day in the village.

The Friends were announced as the South of England regional winner in the Community Links category of the PTA-UK Gold Star Awards. The award recognises the success of the pop-up village in September which was organised by the PTA to raise money for the school.

During the three-hour event, residents set up business from their homes including an Indian take-away and a beauticians.

Sherston School received £650 from PTA-UK as a reward for all of their hard work.

Chairman Fi Picton said: “When you enter a national award you are aging to be up against thousands of PTAs so we really didn’t think we had a chance.

“We absolutely delighted because it was a really amazing event. All areas of the community were involved in it and we raised a lot of money for the school so it was a really big fundraising success.

“The money is the icing on the cake and it will benefit all of the children at the school. ”

Friends of Sherston School also came highly commended in the national award, narrowly missing out on the top spot by one point.

Members of the PTA attended a special awards ceremony in central London presented by Jonny Mitchell – star of the Channel 4's Educating Yorkshire – and TV presenters Carrie and David Grant.
