THE town centre got a Tudor twist yesterday when Henry VIII took to Regent Street with his wooden stocks.

Richard Loftus, the marketing manager at the Wyvern Theatre, was dressed as the famous king to promote the stage production of Horrible Histories.

Passers-by were encouraged to have a photo taken in the stocks, with the angry-looking king standing by their side.

“People were a little hesitant to put their hands and head in at first, but most people are enjoying it,” said Richard.

“It’s good to get in the town centre in the middle of everything.

“Some people might not think to go to the Wyvern as it’s a bit out of the way, so it’s a great way to promote the show.”

The production will take to the stage on September 16, and Richard is confident that it will be a big success.

“We’ve got a great relationship with Birmingham Stage Company, who run the show,” he said.

“They’ve come to the Wyvern Theatre before to do Horrible Science, which was really popular with everyone. The audience loves them.”

Horrible Histories, which was originally a book series, has been praised for livening up historical events with humour and gore.

“It’s a great way to get kids interested in history,” said Richard.

“History lessons and documentaries can be dull an uninspiring, but theatre is so visual and entertaining. It’s fun for the family whether you’re nine or 92.”

Richard will be donning the royal robes again on Friday, from 11am to 2pm in the Brunel Centre, for more ‘snaps in the stocks’.
